Bennett has recently become incredibly mobile. He can army crawl with the best of them right now! And he is, of course, SO interested and enthralled in everything that is Carter's. Unfortunately, as Carter gets older, his toys get smaller... See where I'm going with this??? I make a point to make sure the floor and reachable areas are free of small parts whenever I let Bennett loose, but this morning I failed in that endeavor. There was this small clear suction cup that goes to one of Carter's spider man toys on the floor that Bennett thought looked tasty. I looked down and see Bennett turning blue!!! They make no sound when they are choking! I flipped out and got the part of out of his mouth, but WOW we were both very shaken up by this!!! So, apparently, vigilance is not enough. This kid is going to require an eye on him every second he is on the floor.
Moms with older kids - how do you keep the small parts away from the babies?????

Wow. Lesson learned! It is so hard when they get mobile--it really is like everything changes in a flash! I'm still learning what Falon can/can't get to...and I can't take my eyes off him for a second!
HOLY CRAP!!!I would have FLIPPED!!! I don't have older kids yet, but my suggestion off of the top of my head is to keep all of Carter's toys in his room and just don't let Bennett go in there. Not sure if that would work, but I would be so over protective- I could totally see myself doing that. There aren't enough minutes in the day or eyes in the back of your head to keep tabs on Bennett- he's too curious! :)
Hi. I can only imagine how scary that was for you.
As you know, I have 3 kids of varying ages. Allie will be 10 next month, Andrew is 4, and Ryan is 2. We try to keep only Ryan's toys in the playroom and the only other toys allowed in that room are toys without small pieces. All of Allie's polly pockets and littlest pet shops are not allowed in the playroom or open areas of the house. She can play with them only in her room. Same with Andrew and his marble games. They are only allowed in his room. On the rare occasions where I let them take the toys with small pieces out of their rooms, I first make sure that Ryan is no where near them (keeping him in the playroom if he is awake or in his room when he is napping)and then I have to be diligent in making sure the pieces go back to the kids' rooms. Same goes for art supplies. Ryan finds crayons EVERYWHERE...first instinct for him is to EAT them! We have learned through poison control that crayons are not dangerous and we have also learned that they pass.....but it's still scary! It's pieces of crayons...not whole sticks or anything! But all art supplies go in 'the art box' and they are also not allowed in the playroom!
We are far from perfect, and yes we have had the choking incidences here. It's the most scary thing in the world to see your child choking. It is something we are going through here (the aftermath of an 'incident')so my heart does go out to you!
You do the best you can!
I have learned that OUTSIDE the home is even more dangerous.
Take care! And I am glad to hear that things are going well!
Yesterday, Carter and I moved the sets with small pieces to his room and put the small pieces in Rubbermaid containers with snap tops to keep them out of reach. Carter even voluntarily threw away all of his "tiny" animal figurines. You know how much Carter loves animals...I was so proud of him!!
That is a fantastic idea and WAY TO GO CARTER for being such a big boy!!!
