Chugging along

Happy Mother's Day!!

Bennett had a great day yesterday! He was tolerating his feedings well so they increased them to 1 ml every three hours (from every six), and he did great with that too! It sounds like such a small amount, but his tummy is still so tiny. A "full" feeding at this age is 6 mls every 3 hours, so we have a ways to go, but its a start! He will have to stay on the TPN (IV nourishment) until he gets to full feedings. Last night at his midnight weigh-in he was 1270 g, which is 2 lbs, 12 oz. Thats a 2 oz loss from yesterday, but I suppose that is to be expected for now.

They also lowered his vent back to the lowest possible setting and he is still on room air. The next step from here is to remove the vent entirely and put him on CPAP (nasal canula that force air into the lungs to keep them open) and see how he does. He nurse told me that if his blood gases (blood work showing how much O2, CO2, etc. is in his blood) continue to come back so great, they may just try it tonight or tomorrow! While we're not "rushing" the little guy, I can't tell you how awesome it would be to see his little face again!!! I haven't seen his face since right after he was born. The vent covers up pretty much the entire lower half of his face, and then the eye mask for the bili-lights covers the top half. But, I'm also "afraid" of taking the next step of removing the vent too... such a delicate balance.

I'm doing really well being home. Carter is THRILLED to have mommy home. It melts my heart. He loves to "help" me "do the pumps" as he calls it. He talks constantly about his baby. Last night, we were driving home from the hospital and he says to Ace and I - "I just love my mommy and my daddy and my baby!" What a heart-tugger! I cannot wait until we can bring Bennett home. My heart hurts when I'm away from him. This is going to be a very bittersweet Mother's Day for sure.

Thanks for looking :)
